Solidaritas Internasional Untuk Gerakan Nasional 5 april

INTERNATIONAL SOLIDARITY GREETINGS TO INDONESIAN UNIONS, WORKERS AND LABOUR ACTIVISTS

On behalf of the Western Australian Branch of the Maritime Union of Australia (MUA), we extend our warm solidarity to your April 5 rallies called to "Unite Against Capitalism and the Elite Elections" in cities throughout Indonesia.

At a time when the world's rich and their allies in Western governments are meeting in London for the G20 Summit, the vast majority of the world's people are being excluded from determining our future. And we know that their solutions to the global crises being hatched at the G20 summit are going to again severely affect our jobs, health and wellbeing. Already millions are out of work or forced into jobs where security and earnings are perilous, endure environmental calamities, suffer as the casualties of war because of their insatiable greed for wealth and their determination holding onto power, whatever the cost to humanity.

But there is an alternative for those who slave to create their profits. It begins with international solidarity, particularly for unions and labour organisations who want to fight against exploitation. That is why we are proud to join you today, to begin collaboration again between Indonesian and Australian workers. We are proud that our union stood in defence of Indonesian workers in 1948 as millions of your country men and women fought to end Dutch colonial rule. We can be counted on again.

If the rich and powerful of the world seek to globalise poverty, misery, war and environmental disasters, then we have every right to globalise our political and social opposition. In fact it is our duty as internationalists.

The Maritime Union of Australia has adopted the theme "Militant, Democratic and Progressive" as its banner. In Western Australia, our branch recently concluded a state conference where members and delegates understood international solidarity is critical in our battles against a global boss. Dockworkers and seafarers have already fought and won major industrial battles because unionists throughout the world have stood together as one.

It is in this framework we wish you success for today, your battles for an independant political voice in the upcoming Indonesian elections and your participation in a militant MayDay.

Dare to Struggle, Dare to Win!

MUA, Here to Stay!

Chris Cain, Secretary of the Western Australian branch of the Maritime Union of Australia.
